arriving at the shelter, and was recently returned after two
years of companionship with a forth (her owners moved to
California), so please consider making your home her

An update for Hillary.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hillary -- a sweet,
long time shelter resident who made friends with many a shelter worker and
resident. Hillary was at least eleven years old when she died, and while
she thrived in her foster home, including a relocation to Canada and back,
her helath rapidly declined in the past few months, and her quality of
life began to seriously suffer. Hillary passed over the Rainbow Bridge
with her equally sweet companion of the past few years, Willow. Although
she was old and feeble at the end of her life, we will always remember her
as the fiesty young girl who first came into the shelter.
Just earlier this summer (in June and July) Hillary lost two of
her cagemates, former CFN ferrets Hermione and Chantilly, who was one of
the very first CFN ferrets). It is a much more empty house without our
"old girls", Hillary, Willow, Chantilly and Hermione.

Willow was featured in a story in the summer issue of the CFN
newsletter in 2000. She was found injured as a stray and was returned to
her owners who had three other ferrets (Linden, Pearl and Buck).
The ferrets belonged to the daughter who began ignoring them a year later
and the parent became fed up with taking care of them. Willow and Linden
lived with them for three years, but were acquired through an acquaintance
who didn't want them any more. They arrived with a healthy population of
fleas and ear mites. Willow and Linden are very sweet and have been
around kids, dogs and cats. They are both from Marshall Farms.
Linden was helped over the rainbow bridge on May 17th, 2004
after suffering from anemia, kidney failure and bowel problems. Her perky
personality will be missed by her cage-mate Willow and all those that
knew her.
Willow is thriving in her foster home along with her foster
siblings Eowyn and Bobbi Sue, plus her extended ferret family
(all former CFN ferrets).
Latest update for Willow.
Willow was one of the sweetest ferrets ever to come to the CFN, which
is actually saying quite a lot. This little dark sable was friends with
everyone who knew her, and even up until the day she died would lavish
kisses upon anyone close by. Like Hillary, Willow lived with fellow ferret
friends in her foster home, making the trip up and back to Canada,
but began to have serious health issues for the past few months.
We miss our little Willow, and will not forget her.

Deacon was found in an alley in Vancouver by a Qwest employee. He took
Deacon home for a week, bought him food, litter, a litterpan, and
treats, while he decided what to do with him. His ferret loving friend
was unable to keep Deacon as a pet, but told him about the Cascade
Ferret Network. Deacon is a gorgeous, huge sable with a dark nose that
is as adorable as he is sweet natured. Deacon is from Marshall Farms.

Scrappy and Sugar Bear are needing to find a new home because
their pregnant owner thinks she needs to "downsize" her pet population. The
pair are staying with her until a new home can be found. Scrappy is a silver
male Marshall Farms ferret purchased from Petco 3 years ago. SugarBear is a
sable female Marshall Farms ferret purchased from Petco 3 years ago. The
owner reports that they are good with the litterpan and have been around
dogs and cats. They have a small two level cage. They have never been
vaccinated. The owner lives in the area of Beaverton, OR.

Hobo was left in a pet carrier to die. Luckily for Hobo that didn't
happen, and a person between homes himself noticed the pet carrier left on
the sidewalk with a pathetic looking ferret huddled inside. He had ferrets
in his life before and he could tell this guy was in very bad shape and
needed help immediately. Even though he didn't have a phone of his own, he
manged to contact CFN and arrange for Hobo to get into our care and to the
vet quickly. If it weren't for his efforts, it is unlikely Hobo would have
survived very long. Dr. Ramsell found that Hobo was emaciated with very pale
gums indicating anemia. He was squinting his left eye and she found that it
had a big ulcer on it. She also detected a heart murmur which may be a
temporary situation cause by his poor condition. In addition the poor guy
had fleas and ear mites. It's going to be awhile before Hobo is up back on
his paws and ready for adoption, but he is lucky to be in the care of an
experienced foster home and is getting a lot of TLC. Hobo is from Marshall
Farms.
Hobo struggled for months while we tried to find a treatment to help him,
but he passed away on November 21 from severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Maggie is a sweet middle-aged ferret that was rescued from a life
of neglect and is looking for a new forever home. She appears to get

Maggie plugged away as her body was devastated by lymphoma, but finally gave
out on her spirit on November 16. Maggie's final months in a CFN foster home
were filled with love and attention, and she is missed dearly.

Sneed is about 3 years old. He is a sable with cute little white toe
tips. Sneed is showing himself to be a little sweetheart full of ferret
kisses. La-La is a small sable female. She appears to be frailer
than the boys and seems a bit emaciated, skin and bones appearance, she is
alert and active....although tires easily. They arrived at CFN through
Humane Haven in Redding CA where they, along with a pair of cagemates
(Domino and Balboa), were confiscated from a homeless man living in his car.
They were transferred to CFN to find new homes outside of CA. Both are from
Marshall Farms.

Pedro was a stray who had been living under someone's deck for
several days before a neighbor captured him in a yard debris container.
This sweet guy was not so sweet smelling, being a hob in season with the
testicles to prove it, but has a very sweet personality and is very
talkative. He has been neutered, but not descented and in about a month,
after his testosterone levels have levelled off, he should smell no worse
than any other ferret.

Sally was adopted with her cagemate Neil in May by their foster
parent when the foster parents found out they needed to move Florida.
The day before they were due to make the big move, Sally got severely ill
and could not make the trip. She has been under intensive care ever since
for spontaneous diabetes, an unreported condtion in ferrets. Dr. Ramsell
has been working around the clock to get her stabilized. She really needs
some special needs sponsors to help pay for her treatments. Sally is
responding well at this point, and the vet is hopeful, but she will need
to be on insulin the rest of her life and will need close monitoring.
Sally originally arived at CFN because of a Good Samaritan that has adopted
several ferrets through CFN. She rescued Sally and Neil from in front of
a pet store where the owner was going to give them away to anyone passing
by willing to take them. She had her hands full with all the ferrets she
already had in her household, so CFN stepped in to help them find a new
home.
Sally was adopted by Dr. Ramsell, who saved Sally's life after she
became diabetic. Sally is now cage buddies with Rico.

Yogi and Maggie May, along with four other ferrets, were
forced to find new homes when a sick relative of their owner required
the family to relocate from Astoria to Arizona. Yogi is very dependent on
having a menagerie of stuffed animals nearby. He takes them everywhere and
gets stressed if he has lost tract of any of them. One of his favorites
is a really long snake with a rattle. He is a sensitive boy and takes time
to adjust to changes and new people. Maggie May has "tunnel vision" when
it comes to tubes: she loves tubes -- ANY tube -- she can't get enough of
them! She isn't entirely "fossorial" (a biological term for having
adaptations for life in tunnels), she is also somewhat arboreal as well
(she is good at climbing). Maggie May is very outgoing and holds her own
with any boy. Yogi and Maggie May are both from Marshall Farms.

MacGyver was a stray who unfortunately got found by a border collie
that shook him violently three times before he could be rescued. He
survived his ordeal and was turned over to the Bonnie Hayes Animal Shelter,
but no one claimed this sweet guy, and so he came to CFN where he is
now playing with other ferrets and enjoying himself while he waits to
find a new home. MacGyver is from Marshall Farms.

This fellowship of ferrets came to CFN via a humane society in Redding CA --
because ferrets are illegal in CA they had to be sent out of state. A CFN
representive drove all the way down to Meford and back in the same day to
pick them up from the volunteer that had been providing foster care for
them for a year while they were in CA. Aragorn, Leoglas and
Gimli did not arrive at the humane society together, but they have
formed a great friendship and we'd hate to see the fellowship broken. At the
very least, if they don't go together they need to go to a home with a ferret
playmate since they love to play with other ferrets. All three boys are from
Marshall Farms.
Aragorn and Gimli found a home together in July, but Legolas, who
loves to play with people and other ferrets, is still looking for his
perfect home. In the meantime, Legolas lives with his other ferret
friends in his foster home.

Zute is as sweet as she is chubby. She has cute freckles on her

Chihiro is named after the strong female main character in
Spirited Away, an amazing, gorgeous, wonderful movie about a girl
left on her own that has to save herself and her parents from a ghost world.
Chihiro was found wondering near the Beaverton transit center, and was very
thin, dehydrated and had diarrhea. After getting antibiotics and
supplemental feedings she started to get stronger and look less pathetic,
but she still seemed atrophied in her muscles, especially in her hind
quarters, as if she had been cage bound for much of her life. Chihiro also
seemed atrophies in her personality, and she did not react to things as a
normal ferret would. A box full of crushed newspapers was ignored, human
interaction appeared to confuse her -- it was very sad to see. She did
enjoy chewing on electrical cords and rubber door stoppers which every
other ferret has ignored in preference to playing with the plethora of
fun things available to interact with. She has been improving and learning
that life can be fun, but she may need to go to an experienced home.

Big Bear is just the sweetest gentle giant. He was not very active
which is always of concern, even with a 5 year old ferret, inactivity equals
a health issue. Big Bear also had a huge abdomen which can mean fluid
retention from a heart problem. Unfortunately that is just what Dr. Ramsell
found after his exam, an enlarged heart and a heart murmur. Big Bear was
started on some medication to help his heart work better and to reduce the
amount of fluid retention in his abdomen. He will need to be closely
monitored, but he is coming out of his shell and starting to act more like a
real ferret.

This pair (Mr. Green Jeans arrived with Brego) was a sorry sight when they
arrived from being transported north
from Roseburg by a shelter volunteer. Their former owners felt very guilty
about their state, a result of a poor financial situation in addition to an
incident of (human) procreation. Mr. GreenJeans had a tumor on his
hind leg the texture and size of a can of Spam. It didn't smell like Spam
though, it smelled MUCH worse and was leaking bloody fluid. Both were thin
with poor muscle tone from being confined to a small cage. Both also had
coarse, dry, dirty, sparse fur with bald patches indicating probable adrenal
disease and a bad infestation of ear mites. Mr. Green Jeans and Brego
had good attitudes though and dove into their food bowls with gusto.
Mr. GreenJeans went to the vet the next day and we had to make a decision of
removing his leg or euthanizing him. Given his age, it was not an easy
choice, but lots of ferrets do great with 3 legs, so we decided to give him
a chance (he's now scooting around and playing just fine).

April was named for the month in which she arrived at CFN. She was
described as a ferret in a "pestilent condition". They assumed April's
hairloss was caused by some kind of parasite (if you are familiar with
ferrets, you can probably guess what April's problem really was: adrenal
disease). April needed to be given a name since her owner never bothered
giving her a name of her own. April's owner was also surprised to find
that his ferret was a female rather than a male, as he had thought for
all the years she lived with him. Her owner was very relieved to find
out April actually had adrenal disease and needed surgery and was, in
fact, not "pestilent". I think he was mostly glad to know his apartment
wasn't infested with some sort of pest. Apparently April did not get
much handling, her owner had a disability that prevented him from being
able to pick her up or pet her. She tried to nip me when I held her to
determine her sex and condition. Her fur, what there was left of it, was
like wire. She did at least have a cozy hammock in her cage and some
jingle balls, her favorite toys, that accompanied her to her new life.
April is now in a foster home where she can start getting spoiled and
let her true nature shine through her rough appearance. Her foster
parent has already been the recipient of some ferret kisses of
gratitude. April will be scheduled for adrenal surgery soon. April is
from Marshall Farms.
April died from long term complications after a very difficult surgerical
pocedure, and her foster parent misses her very much.

The original owner of this duo could not keep them, so they were given to
a former roommate to take care of, he became unable to care for them any
longer and turned to CFN to find them a new home. Menehuni and
Malia arrived in an extremely small cage with no bedding at all, let
alone a hammock. They are currently being treated for ear mites and learning
to enjoy the good life of hammocks to lounge in a stairs to race down as
well as a third ferret they get to play with (Smokey) in their foster home.
The male has been renamed Menehuni (men - e - HOO - nee) after a
mischievous little sprite-like or gnome-like creature from Hawaiian
folklore. The female is now called Malia, which is Hawaiian for
rainbow. Menehuni is very kissy and Malia has an incredibly soft coat
which has resulted in the vet referring to her as a "glamour ferret". Both
are from Marshall Farms.

Rico was seen hiding under the wood pile in the yard of an animal
lover that puts food out for feral cats. She had seen him for several days
before he wondered into her house (and under the dishwasher) late one night
when the door had been left open. She was able to lure him out and into
a very make-shift, temporary enclosure until someone from CFN could
retrieve him. Rico is a sweet boy that was covered in fleas and a bit on
the thin side, but he is now flea-free, very mellow and is happy to have
clean food and water and some human attention. Rico is from Marshall Farms.

The friend of the roommate of Claudia's owner called CFN to tell
us that she knew a ferret that was being neglected and she had convinced
the owner that because he wasn't making sure the ferret had water, food,
and a clean cage, and was not giving it any attention, the ferret needed
to find a new home. The current owner had gotten Claudia from someone else
and had thought the ferret was a male and was calling it Clyde. Claudia
is adorable and just needs to be treated for ear mites and get fully
vaccinated before she can go to a new home. Claudia has no tattoos so
we don't know her origin.

Foxy and Rufus originally arrived in June 2005 when they were
one year old, and they came to CFN because of a rental issue. Rufus
and Foxy were adopted very quickly, but a year later they returned when
the family that adopted them called to say that the pair had not been out
of their cage for a month! They did not think that this constituted
neglect, but if they had never let their child out of its room for a
month, they probably would have considered that neglectful. Rufus and
Foxy are still beautiful ferrets that deserve better than this. Rufus is
from Marshall Farms, but Foxy has no tattoos to indicate her origin.

The former owner of this pair of sprites acquired them in Minnesota
while he was attending college. The owner moved to Medford and into the

Anakin is a mellow boy, but is very attentive and aware of his
surroundings, and he does hold his own in play sessions with other ferrets.
Padme is a sweet girl who knows how to party! She is quite the
handful, and never wants to sit still… there's always something that needs
to be inspected.
They shares a history typical to the other ferrets at CFN, the owner
simply didn't have time for them anymore. They appears to get along well
with cats, and have a history of doing well with children.
Anakin and Padme are from Marshall Farms.
Padme briefly found a home of her own at the beginning of 2006,
but through no fault of her own was returned to CFN and reunited with
Anakin. She is scheduled for adrenal surgery in early May

Eddie and Fiona's owner is moving to California in August
and ferrets are illegal to have as pets in that state. They need to find
a new home before the move. They are keeping them until a new home can be
found. The owner said the following about the pair:
Eddie is a dark-eyed white male about a year old from Marshall Farms, and
he is very sweet natured -- once he settles down he will lay with you and
snuggle. Eddie loves to take baths, he goes completely limp and lets you
wash him or whatever. Fiona is a sable female about 11 months old, we bought
her last September from Scamps. She is not a Marshall Ferret. She is very
spunky and very smart. She truly is a ton of fun to play with.
They have both been around cats, They have been around my nephew (4 months
old) and never bite him. We have a cage for them, which includes a hammock,
tube, igloo, and other toys. We also have a bunch of treats, shampoo, etc.
We would really prefer for them to go together, as they are very good friends.
We have kept up on both of their shots and vet visits.

Rocket was purchased from a Portland pet store as a gift for a
grandson in Moser, Oregon. After one week Rocket was living with an
acquaintance of the grandson's family, after another week the ferret
was living with the ex-husband of the acquaintance, who saved the baby
ferret from being "released" into the wilds of central Oregon. After a
week Rocket's rescuer knew he couldn't keep her either, but luckily he
was persistent at finding a shelter and was willing to transport her
from White Salmon, Washington to Portland. The cage she arrived with
(which we intended to have her stay in until she was through with her
quarantine period) was not secure for a ferret her size, and she just
slipped right between the bars whenever she wanted to. They had just
left the door open once they found out she could do that, but they
neglected to mention that over the phone when they asked if they should
bring her in her cage. She was given a quick look over to verify her
sex and look for signs of fleas when I noticed a reddish oval protuberance
on her back. ACK! This was my first case of a ferret with a tick -- I'm
not very squeamish, but ticks freak me out! Luckily the guy that drove
her to Portland was experienced and willing to pull the tick out of
the poor little girl's skin. Rocket doesn't have any tattoos to indicate
her origin, and she has not been descented, which also means she has
probably not been spayed; therefore when Rocket is old enough CFN will
provide this service.

Princess Pixel has had quite the travel itinerary to make it to
Portland. CFN got an e-mail on April 14 about a stray ferret at an animal
control agency in Humbolt California -- she was getting special treatment
since she had wondered into the home of the mayor of Humbolt. A
wonderful person living in Grants Pass had contacted CFN just recently,
after reading about our last rescues from California (Aragorn, Legolas,
and Gimli) and had offered to help transfer ferrets from further south
to Portland. She was contacted about this individual and in no time flat
she drove all the way from Grants Pass to Humbolt to pick her up. Pixel
stayed in Grants Pass for a couple weeks, then traveled north on I-5 and
is now in Portland, but she has already started to acquire her own
possesions (like any princess), and she brought her favorite toy from Grants
Pass, a small stuffed "Big Bird". Princess Pixel if from Marshall Farms.
Princess Pixel is a very intelligent and very active ferret with excellent
problem solving abilities, a streak of stubbornness, and above
average jumping abilities -- little wonder she escaped from her
home in California (prospective owners take note). Pixel loves to play
with people, and has a great time racing about the house, playing chase
and talking up a storm.

A ferret advocate was trying to rescue Banjo from his owner because
Banjo was never let out of his cage and was fed very poor quality
catfood. After she let him know how badly he was doing as a ferret
owner, the fellow finally agreed to let Banjo out once a week for an
hour. After a couple of months of that, he decided the ferret wasn't
worth the effort, and gave Banjo to a woman who had a young ferret,
Otter. Two proved too much for her, and she decdided she didn't want
either one. Banjo is about 2.5 years old and may be showing early signs
of adrenal disease with thin fur across his shoulders. He continues to
fatten up as he snarfs down healthier food. Otter is about 6 to 8
months old, and is a chocolate sable. Both boys have wonderful playful
personalities. Otter is great at snorkling in water, dipping about half
his body into the bowl. Banjo is the chase and pounce king, and yet
both boys are very gentle. Banjo is from Marshall Farms, Otter has no
tattoos to indicate his origin.

A Good Samaritan that has adopted several ferrets through CFN rescued this
pair from in front of a pet store where the owner was going to give them
away to anyone passing by willing to take them. She had her hands full with
all the ferrets she already had in her household, so CFN stepped in to help
them find a new home. Both are doing well in their foster home and get along
great with the other ferrets. Neil isn't as active as Sally:
he plays and then becomes a furry speed bump after about 30 minutes, and
then goes back to playing again after a 5 to 10 minute rest.

Smokey had the misfortune to be owned by irresponsible people who
abandoned the house they were renting. The owner of the residence found
out a ferret had been left behind after a fire inspector came out to
look into a fire that started in the home a couple of days after the
renters disappeared. Smokey had been left all by himself for 5 days in
the basement and survived the fire on the second floor of the home
before he was finally discovered and rescued. His rescuers said they had
to pass through rooms with drug paraphenalia and posters of naked women
on the walls. No wonder Smokey is doing the dance of joy in celebration
of his rescue every time he gets out of his cage. Smokey is from
Marshall Farms.

Chief was an unneutered stray found in Albany. The Good Samaritan
that took in Chief already had a ferret, but Chief was too rambunctious
for him and was more nippy than she and her children could handle, so she
was unwilling to keep him. Chief has now been neutered. Two words:
teddi-bear.

Max's former owner saw him at the pet store and when she held him
she thought she had found her perfect ferret she always wanted, but a week
later she called CFN because Max had turned into a wild thing, and bites
a lot, and goes crazy, and I have a baby and a cat, and I just
can't keep him any more! Max is a typical baby ferret and CFN will
find him a new home with a better educated owner. Max is from Triple F.

Padme is a sweet girl who knows how to party! She is quite the
handful, and never wants to sit still… there's always something that needs
to be inspected. She shares a history typical to the other
ferrets at CFN, the owner simply didn't have time for her anymore. She
appears to get along well with cats, and has a history of doing
well with children. Padme is showing symptoms of adrenal disease and
will be scheduled for surgery soon.

Natasha is very picky about her ferret companions and her former
owner feels she would happy with no other ferret friends. She
has had quite a few health issues in her relatively short life.
She has already had her left adrenal gland removed and was
diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which requires long
term medication. The vet has also noticed that she has developed
a heart murmur. Natasha is from Triple F.
Natasha is doing wonderful in her foster home, and has won over
her foster parents completely. She's gained weight and has
grown a stunning new coat. She's also treated like a queen
and now expects royal treatment from everyone.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Natasha. Natasha
lived most of her life as a CFN ferret in a foster home, where she was
spoiled as all ferrets should be. While at the old CFN central facility
Natasha quickly became a staff favorite with her spunky attitude and
affectionate (to people) nature, and she continued to gain a loyal
base of fans when she moved into a foster home. It was always a treat
to go to an event and see Natasha again, or to hear about her latest
antics from her foster parents. We all miss her.

Olympus first arrived at the shelter from an Oregon middle school
teacher. He was being housed in and aquarium in the classroom, not good. The
teacher was notified of the insurance policy of the school and Olympus was
no longer welcome. He is a healthy 1.5 year old bundle of joy. His beautiful
cinnamon coloring has darker accents along with a white stripe down his
head. He yearns for his playtime when he can romp and wrestle around with
other ferrets, or even play with a ball by himself. Olympus is from Marshall
Farms.
December 2005 update: Olympus started having some odor issues, a symptom of
adrenal disease. An exam reveled some other symptoms, some squamous cells
in his urine and a slightly enlarged left adrenal. He was given a lupron
injection to see if that alleviates his symptoms. He will likely be
scheduled for adrenal surgery soon and could use a sponsor to help with the
cost of the procedure.
Olympus went home to be a playmate for former CFN ferret Enya.

Captain and Tenille are typical of many ferrets found
in shelters these days: originally purchased on impulse
from Petco along with all the required accessories, and as with most
of these purchases, after a year of ownership they were given up
because the owners "didn't have time for them."

If and when this little guy gets enough hair, we'll be able to tell you
what his coloring is. Right now, he's more than half naked. Duncan's
head looks like he could be chocolate; his tail indicates possible silver --
that is, the half of his tail that has hair. But in spite of his lack
of hair he is very cute. Obviously he has adrenal issues that need to be
addressed. He hasn't been too sidetracked by all the new faces he's
meeting in foster care, and so far no one has beckoned him to be a
special friend, but sometimes these things take time. He's settling in
and concentrating on the food bowl. Gained 125g in five days!! He's
from Marshall Farms, and was turned in to Bonnie Hayes shelter as a stray.
