May 25, 2004 Amaretto has been sponsored for Marjorie E. Hageman as a present by her granddaughter Marla Blaney. Before Amaretto came to the Cascade Ferret Network near the end of 2001, she was being used by a backyard breeder. These people just breed ferrets for money -- they don't play with them or socialize them properly. And so, when she arrived at the shelter at 4.5 years of age, she was a 'biter,' and hadn't been spayed yet. After being spayed the shelter staff worked with her to help her learn that humans were her friends, and they didn't like being bitten. Amaretto made a lot of progress, but she always wanted more time outside of her cage to play. A volunteer had pity on her and decided to foster her and both of them have been very happy with the arrangement ever since. Amaretto's sponsorship helps pay for her prescription diet that helps maintain her weight and better stools. February 2005: Near the end of 2004 Amaretto went to see the vet and they found she had a heart problem so she was stared on a heart medication that she will be on the rest of her life. At the same time the vet found some lymph glands that felt swollen. Thanks to her foster parent, Amaretto was able to get a biopsy done to verify that she has a slow growing form of lymphoma. She is on prednisone now and extra soup feedings to try to keep her feeling good for as long as possible. |
