May 5, 2003 Since: January 22, 2002 Prairie's sponsor, Michael Piscitelli, is a ferret lover living in the land of oppressed fuzzies. Prairie had adrenal surgery in June of 2001. Originally the biopsy results said that the tumor had been completely removed, but unfortunately it was malignant so it could have spread to other areas of her body before it was removed. We were glad to get an addendum to the pathologist's report that changed the tumor from malignant to benign after a more experienced person reevaluated it. During the surgery the vet removed a sizable chunk of rubber-like material from Prairie's stomach. We hoped this would account for her skinny state when she arrived at the shelter, but biopsies of her gastrointestinal tract came back showing mild to moderate inflammation, which may have been a contributing factor as well. The vet recommended putting her on a medication to reduce the inflammation and we hope this will eventually result in some weight gain for Prairie. To help her along, we have also been supplementing her diet with hand feedings of a/d soup. It has been more than 6 months since her surgery and she continues on the medication and supplemental feedings. She has gained weight and is more playful than she was, but is still thinner than we'd like. |
