Toco
December 1, 2003

Toco is honored to be sponsored by Floyd Carley, an awesome person and ferret lover as well as a major ferret advocate that has worked long and hard to make ferrets legal in California.

Toco arrived in 2001 at the age of 3 years from a loving owner who was unable to give him enough attention any longer. Toco is sensitive and needs a lot of human attention to be happy which he wasn't getting any longer in his former home and this was causing him to revert to his former behavior of biting to communicate his frustration. Unfortunately, even after coming to the shelter, he was unable to get the one on one human attention he craved and his unpredictable biting behavior put off anyone thinking of adopting him. One of the volunteers working at the shelter could see how unhappy Toco was at the shelter, it was obvious he wanted to be with people all the time and he would spend his playtime waiting at the playroom barrier hoping it would disappear so he could follow the humans around and keep them company. She decided to foster Toco. Toco thrived with the individual attention he was getting until a tragic accident in May of 2002 changed his life forever, a dog bite left him partially paralyzed, although it has not diminished his enjoyment of life and attention from humans. He especially loves going outdoors and can move quickly enough that his foster parent needs to keep a close eye on him.

Toco had adrenal surgery in 2003 and was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He is on a special diet along with long term medication to reduce the inflammation.
